Harrods

Well, here I am back again in London during the Christmas season. and of course I had to check the windows displays of the department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols. I must say that was so pleasantly surprised to see that Harrods really cleaned up its act this year, and present us with outstanding visuals so grand, magic and decadent…they are a fashion trip fantasy. Last year Harrods went for the 150 years celebration of Peter Pan, the displays were beautiful, but they lacked the glamour surrounding its theme fantasy. This year with no doubt luxury was the mission: the “Crystal Christmas ” is not really an original theme, but the execution is just superb….Swarovski crystals are present everywhere, it was almost impossible to take photos, the crowd was so excited.

I wish I could say the same about Harvey Nichols Frozen Christmas window display, this is my favorite department store in London; they always come up with the most interesting concepts and ideas, but unfortunately in 2011 I was very disappointed with the decorations, even more with the execution; it is a mixed confusion of what abstract with Christmas can be. The displays lack refinement for such a great holiday, specially for such a great store like Harvey Nichols, which is so surprising to me.

I always tell my curious friends that it is a true fact that Rio de Janeiro is the best place to spend New Years Eve in the world, just like New York is the most magic place during Christmas season, no city is better, and this year the Bergdorf Goodman windows display are just a stunning dream. Well, I was in London this week, and of course I had to check the famous windows of Harrods and of Harvey Nichols, my favorite department story in that wonderful city, just love Harvey Nix, it was also Lady Diana favorite store. The windows at Harrods once again were disappointing to me, I have been following them for almost 10 years now, and again I thought it was a waste of space and creativity. Of course they are still great, but it has become rather repetitive. I looooved the approach that Harvey Nichols brought to the Christmas decorations, some might consider it tacky for such an upscale store, but I think they were brave, and it is a season where people are happy, so why not bring the aliens down and give them a make over? I was very amused by the fact that these aliens had also great Christmas headpieces!

the sewing machines also on lincoln road

Last night I went for a walk on Lincoln Road; things have changed so much from the time I used to live here on Jefferson and 15th St to now…there are so many new stores and restaurants. At some point by far, I could see lots of camera flashes worthy of a red carpet. What was it? Tourist were going crazy with the already familiar display of hundreds of vintage sewing machines of the clothing store All Saints. It is really interesting, but at that particular store the traffic of people were so intense inside, but all they wanted to do was just to photograph the sewing treasures, and the sales people just stood there looking rather bored(so funny), I can honestly assume that some have no idea what the store sells, it is so overwhelming the amount of those great machines. It is good for the show, don’t know if it is good for business there.

I absolutely love the window displays at Harvey Nichols…much more than the ones at Harrods. The concepts at Harvey Nicks are so more interesting developed….while at Harrods it has reached the point that in some cases they have managed to mix beautiful clothes with silly and tacky ideas…it was not always like that…but even during Christmas Season, Harrods windows no longer excites me…but give me Harvey Nichols any time of the day…or any time of the night!

Every year the Christmas windows at Harrods have a theme, this time around The Wizard of Oz took over the main front part of the store, giving an warm welcome to the crowds that come to experience the insanity that is to shop at Harrods this season. Escada, Gucci, La Perla are some of the labels that are part of the  Christmas sets. I personally think that Harrods was more successful in other years, I felt that the majority of the sets were so over styled  that you couldn’t help but get lost with so much going on; if you are going to be that big, it should be really over the top like in the past…even Toto looked confused. Don’t take me wrong, I am not saying that they are not beautiful, but in past years I was in awe of some of those windows, which it didn’t happen this time, however, I loved the yellow brick road that they built. I know there were a lot more going on involving the theme inside the store….but honestly,  no I way I was going to get in !
